MINKY WOODCOCK: THE GIRL CALLED CTHULHU
CYNTHIA VON BUHLER’S NEW GRAPHIC NOVEL REVEALS HOW DETECTIVE AND SPY NOVELISTS CHANGED THE COURSE OF WWII
MINKY WOODCOCK is drawn into a case that opens with a collaboration between H.P. Lovecraft and Harry Houdini and winds up involving notorious occultist Aleister Crowley and James Bond creator Ian Fleming in a clandestine plot to fight the Nazis in World War II – and every one of these implausible-sounding elements of the story is drawn from documented historical fact. Meticulously researched and entirely hand-illustrated by von Buhler, THE GIRL CALLED CTHULHU was inspired by a true WWII maritime operation, “Operation Mincemeat,” that drew on the talents of detective and spy novelists in an attempt to deceive the Third Reich. Though Minky Woodcock and her family members are fictional, all other key figures in the story are historical. Positing a female detective at a time when such a thing was rare (and written and drawn by a female creator at a time when female representation in comics continues to be rare), THE GIRL CALLED CTHULHU brings a refreshing feminist point of view to bear on the epoch-shaping events of the 20th century. In the same spirit, all variant covers for the series have been illustrated by female artists, including (on Issue #1) Celina, Claudia Ianniciello, and Alison Sampson. Photo covers for all four issues feature actress and burlesque performer Pearls Daily, who played Minky Woodcock in the 2018 live stage adaptation of THE GIRL WHO HANDCUFFED HOUDINI. |
